Ten Hag Hits Back at McCarthy’s Critiques
Manchester United head coach, Erik ten Hag, has responded to comments made about him by Benni McCarthy.
From 2022 to 2024, the former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates striker worked under Ten Hag as a first-team coach for the Red Devils.
In a recent interview with a Portuguese soccer outlet, McCarthy expressed his criticism of the 54-year-old Dutchman, who has faced backlash from fans and pundits for his management of United: “He lacks a bit of that fire, that passion. That’s where we differ, him and I.”
Speaking to a British sports outlet recently, a surprised Ten Hag made his thoughts known about the South African legend’s remarks.
“I don’t know what he means,” he said with a hint of defiance. “In the last six years, I’ve won eight trophies. I don’t think you can do that without passion and fire. I always motivate my team. When you win trophies, you can’t do this without passion and desire.”
Ten Hag added: “Everyone is different. But I don’t know if [McCarthy’s comments were] taken out of context, if it’s real what he said, because I know him as a different person.”
